One word can truly characterize the area of Mavrovouni: the horizon. The amazing Laconian Gulf that opens up before it allows the visitor’s imagination to travel beyond the Mediterranean where continents, cultures and histories intersect. You could spend hours gazing at the deep blue sea and the endless golden sandy beach. Tamarisks and prickly pears only add to the absolute Mediterranean landscape. The main settlement of Mavrovouni is located on the hill above the beach along with its picturesque square and the towers that alternate with small houses and fragrant yards.

For adventure lovers the area constitutes an excellent basis for expeditions. Areopoli which is the gate of Inner Mani can be found 24 km away and it has a unique character thanks to its wild natural landscape and the charming austerity of its settlements. Dozens of beautiful beaches and routes with an impressive view promise unique excursions that can lead even to the legendary Cape Tenaro, the southern part of mainland Europe that always stimulated people’s imagination. 

Byzantine churches of great historical value can be found in the area and they depict the rich local history while the caves of Diros offer an unforgettable experience to young children and adults. Last but not least, at dusk you can take a beautiful walk down the specially designed walkway that stretches for 2 km up to Gythio and admire the spectacular view. You may end up drinking ouzo at the pier or having a meal at the taverns opposite the island of Kranai that has a rich mythological tradition and a historic lighthouse.
